Nova Scotia Mackerel Fish Fry: A Taste of Our Coast
Share
If you call Nova Scotia home, you know we're incredibly lucky when it comes to fresh fish. Among the bounty, mackerel stands out, abundant and delicious. While I had the pleasure of catching this one myself, you can easily find fresh mackerel at local spots like Warehouse Market (Isleville street) or Local Source( Windsor st) or Hooked in Novalea Market.
This recipe is simple, quick, and truly lets the fresh mackerel shine.
Ingredients
- 4 whole mackerel
- 3 tsp Annada Fish Masala
- 4 cloves garlic, crushed
- 15 grams butter
- Salt for flavour
Instructions
- Clean the mackerel thoroughly. Lightly score the skin a few times on each side. This helps the flavours penetrate and ensures a crispy skin.
- Generously rub the Annada Fish Masala all over the mackerel, making sure to get some into the scored cuts. Let it marinate for 30 minutes to allow the spices to work their magic.
- In a large pan, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the crushed garlic and let it sizzle for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Carefully place the marinated mackerel into the hot pan. Fry the fish for 4-6 minutes per side, or until the skin is beautifully crisp and golden, and the fish is cooked through.
- Enjoy your mackerel while hot!
Serving Suggestion
To complete this delicious meal, I whipped up a kale Caesar salad. I used fresh kale from Warehouse Market on Isleville Street and made crunchy croutons from Boulangerie La Vendéenne bread. The crisp, fresh salad provides a perfect contrast to the rich, flavorful mackerel.
